This course is an introduction to global emissions trading and emissions trading systems (ETS), specifically various cap and trade programs. These ETS focus on carbon, primarily CO2 emissions, but many also include other environmentally damaging greenhouse gases. ETS mechanisms have become increasingly popular as a way to help mitigate the problem of growing global emissions. About 15% of the earth’s emissions are now covered by an ETS program and according to industry groups more than 2 billion people live in jurisdictions with a functioning ETS program. Several ETS have been in operation for almost two decades and they have proven to be one of the most efficient and effective ways to facilitate emissions reductions through economic efficiency rather than through a direct tax on carbon. This results in lower costs, and even revenue generating opportunities, to organizations capable of reducing their GHG emissions.
There are no pre-requisites for this course and no advance preparation is required.
