
This course is an introduction to battery storage. The first ‘true’ battery was invented in 1800, so batteries have been around for over two hundred years. In our daily lives, we’re quite familiar with the role batteries play in powering our mobile devices and our portable computers. The ongoing energy transition and advances in battery technology have renewable project developers increasingly looking toward battery storage as a means to overcome the “Achilles' heel” associated with renewables: the fact that their reliability and output could be constrained due to changing weather conditions. The ability to store renewable energy not only enables it to be used as baseload generation, but also provides battery storage owners with the opportunity to sell their electrons into the market when prices are higher during peak demand periods creating an arbitrage opportunity.
There are no pre-requisites for this course and there is no advance preparation required.

- Select the best application for a specific type of battery-related storage
- Point out how battery costs have changed as they become more fully commercialized
- Identify how battery storage can be co-located with renewables for greater price arbitrage opportunities; and
- Point out how battery storage projects, including virtual initiatives, are being used in various global applications to enhance power quality and reliability
Practice exercises and self-assessment quizzes are included to help reinforce key topics introduced throughout the course.
A comprehensive final test will be given at the end of the course.
